In his time, he shed an edifying light on a slice of the religious history of Central and Northern Arabia. The manuscript of Ibn al-Kalbi remained in the shadows for centuries.
It was not until a wind of renewal blew over the Arab world, that Ahmad Zakî published it in 1914.
The work is limited to the "important gods" mentioned in the Qur'an, and to some secondary deities.
This book is neither a story nor an epic or mythological tale. It is a corpus of Arab or adopted deities. At his reading we discover many aspects of anti-Islamic Arab paganism, different from other idolatry. One imagines some distant scenes in time, of the daily life of these Bedouins, it is better understood why neither Judaism nor Christianity could replace Arab polytheism, and that it was not until the Islâm to see the pagan crowds of Arabia gradually renounce idolatry and return to the pure religion of Ibrâhîm. The translation of the full text presented here to French and Arab-French-speaking readers allows them, on the one hand, to get a clearer idea of certain aspects of the religious life of ancient Arabia and, on the other hand, to better understand the passages of the Qur'an that deal with the Oneness of Allah and condemn the association with God of deities, as a product of the human imagination.
